Obesity is a worldwide epidemic, especially prevalent in developed countries like the UK. People suffering from extreme overweight are at particular risk for many obesity related health problems such as Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, sleep apnea as well as premature death. Fortunately, several medically proven surgical solutions are available which offer effective, permanent weight reduction.
Weight loss surgery achieves its goals by artificially limiting the amount and rate of nutrient absorption. The simplest method is the gastric balloon procedure which uses stomach volume displacement to restrict food intake. Gastric sleeve surgery achieves weight reduction by surgically altering stomach shape and size while also inhibiting a hunger stimulating hormone. Gastric bypass surgery combines both stomach volume reduction and nutrient restriction by removing part of the patient’s stomach and upper intestine. Both sleeve and bypass procedures are performed using minimally invasive laparascopic techniques.
Extensive research observing post-op weight loss for bariatric patients have conclusively proven that bariatric surgery is the most effective way to arrest and reverse chronic adult obesity. Average loss of excess weight is about 60%, with a mortality rate worldwide of <1%. Obesity surgery combined with changes to diet and exercise offers the best hope for shedding overweight and keeping it off.
